Indecision Resolved

It may not appear so, but I worked on this piece for several days. My first brush scribbles danced around the idea of faces. I contrasted the linear strokes with gray and blue washes. I created three or four faces consciously, but there could be more of which I am not aware. The canvas looks […]

Metropolis Girl

I began today’s experiment with an arc of yellow. Then I completed the rest of the head skeleton with that same color. I chose an appropriate blue to merge with the yellow to create an acceptable green. I also applied some blue directly, for eyebrow and lip strokes. I put this aside for a while; […]

Long Necked Woman

The palette I used for this portrait is the same as yesterday’s.. I used complementary colors to represent the half of the face in light (red) and the half in shadow (green).  I know I need more ideas that using highly contrasting colors to represent light and shadow, to make progress in portraiture.

Blind and Refined Drawings – Same Subject

I wanted to see if I could draw in correct proportions after more than a year of drawing without the feedback of looking at the paper.  I’m happy with the figurative drawing of my grandson.

The frisket also does not allow permanent marker traces to bleed through. I used markers to cross hatch the area around the dried liquid latex, so the areas would be accentuated. Then I […]

Loving Couple

I like this double portrait. I kept the lines simple, as I imagine Paul Klee would have done. I think I was able to capture some emotion in this portrait.

Abstract Portrait of Mike

I continue with my portrait series of my brother Mike, below. (Mike is autistic, low functioning and nonverbal.) See yesterday’s post (Evolution of a Portrait Series) for the process I underwent to arrive at today’s watercolor/charcoal sketch. Mike often held his hand to his ear. He held his hand in a position in which his pinky jutted […]

Evolution of a Portrait Series

Mike, my older brother, is autistic, low functioning and nonverbal. The last visit with brother Mike was in 2013 (see  The Visit, Note – this post may contain triggers as I was very distraught when I wrote it; no disrespect was intended.) Below is one of the last photos I took of Mike:   This is a […]
