Park Bench Series No. 3

This is the third photograph in my Park Bench Series. Like the others (Park Bench Series No. 1, Park Bench Series No. 2) it is perched on the shore of the same body of water.  It has a taller stance than the others, perhaps to see over the weeds that may obstruct the view.

Inspired by Matisse

I started reading more about Matisse. I am reading Matisse in Morocco, at the moment. Many European artists visited North Africa during Matisse’s time.  The light in this equatorial region of the world must have been quite a change from that of the more northern latitudes. Matisse seemed to be fascinated by the Arabic influence […]

Park Bench Series No. 2

This bench is slightly different than the first in this series. Even though it faces the same body of water, it is a bit more rustic, perhaps even lower to the ground. Was the site for each bench was considered when choosing the style of seating to be installed?  We’ll see in the next few […]

Dream Skyline

I love photographs depicting the tops of bridges or very tall buildings, when the rest of the edifice is obscured by clouds. Since I am not inclined to take my camera to great heights or wait for clouds to enshroud a favorite bridge or building, I painted my own misty environment and used sepia ink […]

Park Bench Series No. 1

I made it to the park, on one of my walks. It’s a hike, but I need the exercise. There are quite a variety of benches along the path around the lake. Each bench provided a view very similar to the others. The view, therefore was not the subject of the photograph. The upcoming set […]

Disks and Lines

I painted the background of today’s watercolor first (sans disks), without and idea of how the composition would develop. Since I am working with inked lines lately, I noted several color boundaries that cried out for defining lines. I began with the border of the yellow and worked outward. Some of the lines echoed the […]

Pre-Bikon Pavement Sign

The other day during my walk I found a sign on the side of the rode that indicated the boundaries for the bicycle lane. It was a pictorial representation of a pedal bike. I called it a ‘bikini‘. Yesterday, I found another pavement sign indicating the bike lane. I suppose it is an historic sign, […]

Rainbow in Outer Space

I started with circles today. I wanted to make some of them magnify the light behind them so I shifted the lines as they passed through. The rest of the forms hold together as a conglomeration of flat planes. The orange prow slices through the star-studded cosmos.

Blue Arrow and Sewer

I look for signs. Maybe I should have been a tracker, but… I stick to the sidewalks. But a blue arrow pointing into a sewer? I don’t remember seeing that before. I have seen manhole covers that say ‘sanitary sewers’… maybe this is the curb version.

Ink Lines and Angles

I had fun at the drafting table today, drawing lines with my dip pen. It is tricky drawing with a nib dipped in ink. But I have a special straight edge, in the form of a triangle that has edges curved underneath so the ink does not infiltrate between the triangle and the paper.  However, the […]
