Dry Spell

I am hoping to end my painting dry spell, beginning today. I found one of my photos of a hot dog stand that offered a way for me to ease back into painting. It has a good range of tonal values from very dark to very light; the composition is geometric, making it a relatively […]

Did You Know?

Did you know that the Brooklyn Bridge has windows?  I had almost forgotten this until I found the photo below while offloading some pictures from my computer. When I briefly lived in Brooklyn, I commuted to my workplace in Manhattan. I took the photo below on one of my drives home (as a passenger). We were on the approach […]

Remember When?

There were days, long ago, when many people believed the sentiment in the sign above the nightclub, pictured below.  I’m not talking about noise. I mean the thought that someone would write a congressman to expect a solution to a problem.  That thought, more than 25 years later is laughable.

Promised?

At first glance this sign looks to be an exhortation to all who happen by with writing implements. Upon closer reading, it appears as if the building owner is addressing a specific person or persons. Note that the sign writer said “I promised”; ‘promised’ is in the past tense. The building owner already promised not to […]

Aberration

So I wanted to get my eyes checked. Everything looked flat. As I was walking down the street optometrist’s office door just popped out at me. How could I resist?

Almost

I took the shot below at night somewhere in Manhattan. I was always looking for interesting subject matter. I came across a piano on the sidewalk. It was partially wrapped in a tarp, a chair was tied to it with rope; the owner (or player) left a sign that said ‘Back in a minute’.  I wish […]

Winter, Coney Island

This photograph is from the winter of 1990. I pieced it together from two photographs. It seems a little drab, but I like the isolation, the baseline from which emerge the crowds of summer.

Moody

I have mixed feelings about the fog. In New York the fog is wonderful, whether you are outside, wandering around in it or looking at it from inside the apartment or coffee shop. It can also be terrifying, such as a fog bank if you are on a boat on the ocean. I’m sure there are […]

Time Lends Context

I was leafing (I mean scrolling) through some old photographs that I took when I used to wander around NYC.  There was an incongruity in one of them. The shape seemed familiar, but not in the context of my street photography. The thumbnail size of the picture did not at once, offer much clarification. It was […]

Brooklyn Pasttime

Grand Army Plaza, pictured yesterday, wasn’t the only attraction at Brooklyn Day in 1990. I found a section where girls were jumping rope. One of the photos in the background must have been a famous jump roper from the past. I didn’t recognize her, but I enjoyed the feelings of the old times in Brooklyn. It […]
