I am hoping to end my painting dry spell, beginning today.
I found one of my photos of a hot dog stand that offered a way for me to ease back into painting. It has a good range of tonal values from very dark to very light; the composition is geometric, making it a relatively straightforward task to arrange on the paper. I used water-soluble graphite pencils to re-create the range of grays present in the original photograph. After making the sketch, I used a small amount of water and a brush, to activate the gray-black pigments. Finally, I used a very fine ink pen to add details. I found this last step necessary for the small (4.5″x3″) format I chose.
