Curb with Old Paint

I saw an interesting curb on the way back home. I like the texture of the old paint. It looks like a thick coat. The bricks compliments the color of the paint; their textures contrast. The shadow provides a rich dark tone thereby setting up a full range of tonal values.

Artist and Artwork

Will, my grandson, loves clocks. Especially Big Ben. It all started when he saw the Back to the Future, He loved that Dr. Brown saved the day by channeling the lightning, he knew would strike the clock tower, to the Delorian/time machine, and send it back to the future. Will is posing amidst his representation of that […]

Lego Builder

Will, my grandson, builds with Legos. Mainly, he builds clock towers. Specifically, Big Ben. He can spend hours hunched over his overflowing box of lego parts, making a tower, brick-by-brick. I sketched this while he was engrossed in his work.

Party Decorations

When we arrived back to home base, the house was decorated for Siddy’s birthday already. Sidra loves rainbows, so her aunt and family fried strung up multicolored streamers all over the ceiling. It looked like a stalactited cave. How does one depict the ceiling of a cave from the far end to overhead? The sketch […]

Hotel Lighting

I saw this lamp from across the room. The light and the shadow it cast caused me to snap the shutter for today’s photograph. I adjusted the focal length of the camera to re-frame the light source amidst the intervening structures. Thus, this photo is not just about the light, but about the rectangular areas […]

Poolside

What would a vacation be without a pool? I copied a preliminary sketch that I made at poolside, onto watercolor paper. I outlined the strong shapes with dark color markers and used several shading techniques to fill in the solid masses.

Window to Mountains

This is the view from our window. Matisse and Diebenkorn painted a number of works that juxtaposed inside and outside light. Their paintings inspired this study. I am working with a limited palette at the moment. Most of the coloration was not exactly what I had in mind, but it seemed to work out pretty […]

Street and Parking Lot Hydrants

These hydrants, water meters and standpipes serve two potential fire venues, the street and the parking lot.  I wonder if this arrangement was planned. Other photographic captures are found in the following posts: Fire Plugs, Fireplugs, the Beginning, Shiny Standpipe, What Luck!, Colorful Fireplugs, Fire Hydrant, From the Top.

Octagonal Place Mats

As a child, I always liked playing with blocks. Something about fitting wooden squares and triangles together appealed to me. That tendency is still with me, apparently. While my wife and I were waiting for our food to arrive, I fit two of the eight-sided place mats together. The woven patterns matched pretty closely where […]
