Youth and Age

I was always fascinated by the work of the master photographers who worked in the 1930s forward,  but I was very a very shy person. I came upon the scene below in February of 1991. I couldn’t resist. I used a tripod and a camera with a very short lens, so the lady in the picture did not […]

After Klee’s “Little Tree and Shrubbery”

I was thumbing through a book of Paul Klee’s work and came across Little Tree Amid Shrubbery. At first it just looked like patches of color.  When I looked at this piece from a distance, the bushes in the foreground came into clear focus. They were three dimensional. I still didn’t get the sky though. […]

Flower Progression

I missed National Orchid Day but I haven’t been unaware of flowers. In particular, there is a blooming succulent on the porch railing.  I first noticed a change in the almost spherical arrangement of leaves above the rim of the clay pot. It seemed that an alien was projecting a periscope to see what was […]

Back Yard Again

I began today’s study with concentric circles and parallel lines. I used half circles and slanted lines. I couldn’t quite figure out what to do at the intersection between the lines and the arcs, so I sat out on the porch for a while. I decided to try another version of the back yard (see […]

Parallel-ish Lines

For the past couple of day’s (I Just Flipped, Interference Pattern) I’ve been painting parallel lines in one form or another. Today on the back porch I found some ‘in the wild’.  There they were on the porch with the umbrella shadow superimposed.

Interference Pattern

Today I continued my experiment with parallel lines. Many of the parallel lines in today’s study are concentric circles. I drew other figures (two triangles and one rhombus) within which I drew lines parallel to one side. Between the concentric rings, I painted shades of blue up to the edge of the figures. I changed […]

I Just Flipped

the calendar to April, even though the month is half over.  My calendar displays a Paul Klee painting for every month. My composition today was based on the Klee painting for April  (a detail of Necropolis). I sat on the porch looking out at the back yard. I sketched caricatures of the potted plants and the trees […]

Camouflage

My intention today was to paint different blobs of color and then surround them with free-form lines. It didn’t work. Therefore I switched to placing my wandering lines on the page first.  I must have instinctively drawn a face-like profile, which I quickly covered up with other swirls of lines.  Then I began painting with a […]

I Was Wrong Once

Do you know the story of the insufferable man on a blind date, who, trying to impress the girl told her, “I have never been wrong.”  She looked at him with that pasted-on smile, which he must have known was betraying annoyance, so he added, “Oh wait, I was wrong once. I thought I was […]

Tone Studies

After a couple of days of not creating art, I gave it a try today, albeit with limited tools. Here is a tone study of a temporary living space. and another study from a slightly different angle.
