Looking Up

Below is another of my photos from Burbank in sunnier days.  (It’s been raining since we’ve been here.)  William, my grandson is looking up at me. I think he is asking me something. I am able to understand Will much better these days. He will be three years old next week and, although he communicates […]

Wistful

I took the photo below last time I in Burbank. It is a view looking down past my stomach at my grandson William. He is not old enough to be wistful, he just wanted to go outside. I, on the other hand was feeling pangs…

Fornot-Me-Gets

There are three things that go wrong when you get old: your memory; your eyesight and I forgot the other one. I always forget something when I go on a trip. Once, I was so proud that I remembered the power cord for my computer only to realize that I forgot the computer itself. On the […]

On the Road Again

Had a fair ride down south today. Not much time to paint, so I painted twice as much yesterday. Here is what I did. I used turquoise for my blue and aureolin for yellow. I like the subtle green resulting from their combination.

Green Swirl No. 1

I painted a free form design in liquid latex to begin this study. After it dried, I surrounded its perimeter with Permanent Green #1. In the inner border, I used a combination of ultramarine blue and lemon yellow. The paints were very watery and the dried latex acted as a dam. One can see heavier concentrations of […]

Green to Yellow with Squiggles

I used a fine brush to paint the liquid latex at random on my watercolor paper. The result was a network of negative space, over- (or under-) laid on the black-ink network I had previously drawn. I started on one end of the paper with Permanent Green #1 and at the other end with Aureolin […]

Negative Squiggles

I abandon the straight edge and compass for today’s design. I drew free form with my oil-based pen. I had thoughts of eventually washing the paper with a yellow-orange wash, so I filled in some of the loops of the free-form design with dark blue and purple for contrast.  After drying these patches, I painted […]

Abstract 040216

Today’s watercolor is a variation on yesterday’s.  The two stalks surrounded by geometric shapes are pointed toward the green circle in this rendition; yesterday, they seemed to be shrinking away from the orb. The figures do not ‘pop’ as well in today’s study. I believe that some kind of organizing narrative could be constructed by […]

Animal or Vegetable

Yesterday I began with two line forms canted toward each other. I thought it would be interesting to try the same thing with curved lines.  I also replaced the arcs that hugged the straight lines in yesterday’s study, with triangles surrounding the arched lines in today’s design. True to form, I had an unfortunate incident […]

Abstract 033116

I nailed the wash today. It may not seem so from the photo of today’s composition, but there is clearly a gradual progression from the warm English yellow at the top of composition to the cool lemon yellow at the bottom. Yesterday, I made my two straight line forms cross; today, they are separated. I […]
