Healing Over
Amputated tree limbs leave behind open wounds for a time. For some trees, after a great while, there is barely a hint that a branch was ever there. Except for patterns of texture in the trunk. I wonder if trees experience phantom pain.

I’m always on the lookout for texture, line and design. I found some of that the other day, with this portion of a fence that I photographed. There is depth in this photo, as one can see from the shadows. There are zigs provided by the thin lattice boards in the upper right, and zags […]
I love the textures in this photo and that it is rendered in black and white and in color.
This is a study in texture and line. I hadn’t thought about it when I snapped the picture, but this photo reminds me of a shirt sleeve. Perhaps a military insignia of a not-quite sergeant.
The final position in my grid is second painting totally surrounded by others in the grid. This painting has more variations in texture than in color. The composition stands by itself, however, with enough white space and faint charcoal lines to keep the interest of the viewer. The small blue patch at the upper right appears to be […]
Since my foray into abuse of 300 pound (Rough Free Form) watercolor paper, I have learned to handle it a little more delicately. Usually I get a cue from the random design left by the folds in the crumpled paper. Today I relied on an internal (and unidentified) source for inspiration. The red-orange and blue-green […]
I prepared my paper yesterday by soaking it and balling it up. I flattened it overnight between two boards for a while, while the paper was still damp, I laid textured towels between the paper and the hard surface and flattened it some more. The result was paper with a distressed, somewhat embossed surface. Distressed […]
I used the atmospheric approach of yesterday with some bold outlines, in today’s watercolor. The amorphous areas are thus bounded by structure. The edges of the paper bound an awkward space. Three bright areas are mostly enveloped by the heavy greenish outline, but the other two yellow spots are only partially enclosed. I usually do not intentionally […]
The photo below lends itself perfectly to a pen and ink rendition. There are an assortment of grays, and textures abound. Long shadows overlay this terrain. My pen and ink sketch is below:
I began today with two pencil curves, each of which included a tiny loop. I closed my eyes while I was drawing. I found myself constructing a mental image of my sketch. It was more of a feeling than a picture in my mind. I find it difficult to describe the actual experience, but it was unusual, […]
