Sky Construction

I was thinking of a way to translate yesterday’s photograph into watercolor. I have figured out a way to paint facsimiles of clouds – generic clouds. It is much more difficult for me to paint a specific cloud. Therefore reproducing ‘Between the Lines‘ as a watercolor would not be easy. It also wouldn’t further any […]

Stone Treads

I remember tripping on pavement squares that have been raised by tree roots expanding underneath them. Some time later the offending edges were spray painted bright red; shortly thereafter the edges were ground smooth with each other. No more tripping hazard. Below is an intersection between several sidewalk sections. Something about the arrangement must have […]

Between the Lines

I keep my eye open for interesting manhole covers, street signs, unusual painted lines in parking lots, but one of my original ‘go-to’ subjects is clouds. Many times, cloud formations are the most compelling, but once in a while a single cloud can hold its own.

The Deep

I had fun with this composition. It started as a free-form design but instead of coloring the bounded areas, I left most of them empty. I was inspired by Joan Miró’s work, especially his constellation series. I filled in some of the smaller shapes that were formed by overlapping lines. I looked for strange creatures […]

Water Hole Cover

This one caught my attention. The combination of metal, concrete, pink and white writing and most important of all, the blue dot, compelled me to take this street-level photograph.

Taking Pills

Usually, taking pills is no big deal. However, it does take on special significance under certain conditions. For example, doctors have determined that treatment of certain diseases require a cocktail of pills to be given with precise timing. Less drastic, but other very important schedules of pill administrations include antibiotics. When a doctor decides that […]

Burl Texture

Most people can identify burl in veneers. In these thin wooden slices, the burl are manifested as intricate round patterns. Burl found in the wild are bulgy wooden growths on the bark of trees. My study below is an examination of the texture of a collection of these growths. I used a thin fiber-nibbed pen […]

Bark and Texture

A few days ago I did a pen and ink texture study of a very interesting tree I came upon, on one of my walks (see Photo for Texture Study Post).  I could not enlarge that photo to capture more fine texture. The photograph below, another picture taken closer to the tree bark, will be […]

Kites and Flags

I began coloring in the sections of my free form design for today’s study.  Some of the small Venn-diagram-ish overlaps looked like flags. I abandoned the idea of coloring-in larger areas of my amorphous design in favor of using their edges as lines.  I admire Joan Miró’s work, which uses such small shapes and lines […]
