Insomnia

I didn’t begin this composition with insomnia in mind. Somehow, when I was finished, the title came to mind. Could it be the wide open eye amidst the “Z” figure?

Pot Watching

We have a pot that bears watching. As soon as the water heats up a bit, it starts vibrating, albeit at a low frequency. The pot rocks back and forth and it rotates like a clock.  To stop this progression, I insert a spice jar of appropriate height under the handle. I could not resist […]

Dream Image 091817

Fire was streaming from underground. It lit up a path that outlined the shores. Thin strips of land defined by molten lava streams. Nothing could stop it. It could only be diverted.

New Board Game

I have a board for the game, but not the game. Again I’ve edited a parking lot/sidewalk scene for a pleasing visual. I like the colors as well as the shapes.

Flag of an Unknown Country

I like geometry.  Sometimes sidewalks (or parts thereof) line up just right.  I’m not sure if there are any countries that do not have flags, but if there are, my image is available.* * (after appropriate licensing, etc. etc. – have your ambassador get in touch with me.)

Head in Hand

I flip through pages of art books of my favorite artists in search of ideas.  Carolyn Lanchner’s Joan Miró was on my desk and I turned the pages until I got to the following pieces: The Bird with a Calm Look, Its Wings in Flames; The Bird Boom-Boom Makes His Appeal to the Head Onion […]

Imaginary Burl

I posted several sketches from a photograph of a very interesting tree I encountered during one of my walks (Texture Study, Bark and Texture, Burl Texture). Below is my rendition of a completely imaginary tree bark complete with burl. I’m thinking of enhancing this with some light watercolor washes.

Pointilist Photograph

I took this photograph at daybreak just before we put the boat in the water on Monterey Bay.  That early in the morning I felt just like the photograph looked: grainy, dim and barely awake.

Autumn Again

I liked the look of this leaf. It reminded me that fall is coming. There are no masses of leafy trees out here, so we don’t experience striking colors as do people in New England. It is even possible that this leaf could have been left over from last fall. Or the dry weather could […]

Scale and Hands

Here is another composition in the Joan Miró mode.  I have been building a library of icons throughout the years and have been experimenting with ways of arranging them. I prepared the watercolor paper with random washes of pale yellows and blues.  On the lower third of the paper I placed a cone with a […]
