Feathery Clouds and Pinpoint Moon

It was very warm here a couple of days ago. Yesterday it was cool, almost cold by California standards.  There were lots of wispy clouds. The picture below captured one of them, and also a little pinpoint of the moon.

Light Pole

I was on break, yet again today. I wandered to the warehouse wall that is a palette for the afternoon sun. This time the light pole shadow (from the same pole that wanted to be a tree, from the other day) barely reached the wall. The diagonal slats are framed by the construction elements of the […]

Charcoal Abstract

I started by making curves with my charcoal stick. I overlaid the darkest regions with sepia ink and lightened other areas with titanium white. Once again I had nothing in mind as I drew my curves. I do see arrows of differing calibers, and even some tail feathers.

Looking Up

I’m sure that my co-pilot took this shot, or maybe I was riding shotgun and snapped the picture myself.  At any rate I’m sure I didn’t take the photo whilst driving. I did look at the clouds though.

My Vision

This post is not an artist’s statement of how I see my art in relation to my inner vision, etc., etc.. This is about my eyes, my left eye, to be precise. I was reading outside on the porch today. It was very bright. After I came in, the house was very dark, as expected. […]

Abstract with Screw

I painted over some geometric shapes I made, to complete today’s abstract. Some of the imagery was inspired by my memory of some of Kandinsky’s work; other shapes and marks comes from my observations during the day. Once again, I had no real plan for working, no goal, nor principles to adhere to. I have […]

Imperfect Memory

I’ve been reading about Richard Diebenkorn, trying to understand how he created his works of art. I know that every creative person has his or her own way of ‘making [ideas] visible’ (to borrow a phrase that Paul Klee, Bauhaus Master, used to describe how an artist creates). I became so sleepy while attempting to […]

Beginning a Painting

My search for articles about creativity, with specific reference to Richard Diebenkorn (American Abstract Expressionist and Figurative Artist) returned many references to his ’10 rules’ of creativity.  I had already encountered this list in reading John Elderfield’s essay Leaving Ocean Park,* wherein he quotes Diebenkorn’s “Notes to myself on beginning a painting”: “1. attempt what is not […]

The Shadow Knows

There was only one red light-pole base in the whole parking lot. I don’ t know why it was painted red, or who did it. They must have only had one can of paint, though. Nothing else nearby was red. During my break, I went outside and took this photograph. It must have been that […]
