Stars and Stripe

I, as a street photographer, frequently look down. That’s where the street is, of course. There are also interesting things to see on the sidewalk. My photo below reminds me of a flag. See Flag of an Unknown Country.

Purple Curve

More experimentation with glazing today. I like the two different transparent yellows that I used for glazing (lemon and Sennelier yellow).Holbein’s peacock blue is a beautiful transparent blue I used to layer on top of the yellows and reds. I didn’t glaze with reds, as they were not transparent.

Collective Term for Persimmons

There are a plethora of collective terms for groups of animals. Here are a few examples: a group of cows is a herd; a group of geese is a gaggle; a group of owls is a parliment. There are also collective terms for non-animal groups: a bunch of grapes; a forest of trees; a batch […]

Oblate Spheroid

The point of today’s experiment was to play with glazing, or thin layers of transparent watercolors on top of the watercolors that had already dried. The colors become modified by the layers of paint through which the light must travel to get to the viewers’ eyes.  I’m sure that the light reflected from this piece, […]

Spoon

I finished the biography of Leonardo DaVinci this morning. The lesson I learned from this book of more than 500 pages is: Be curious about everything. I learned this early in life thanks to my father. He was a theoretical physicist who knew a great deal about nature. He was a ‘natural philosopher’, an old […]

Couple

I’m still experimenting with tonalities. Today I began with black and brushed it out into the surrounding colors. I added the thin lines to surround the red and yellow fields of color. The resulting figure reminded me of a couple embracing.

Blue and Orange

I tried two different types of shading in the study below. The blues vary from very dark to light blue by adding titanium white. I used very little water in creating the transition. On the other hand, I laid down a watery yellow and added red at the blue border to generate an orange color […]

Street-Hole Cover at Night

I’m not sure what this iron cover is protecting. I wouldn’t call it a manhole cover, as it is only 12-18 inches in diameter. Also, it is in a parking lot. Maybe it is a drain from one of the restaurants. I like the reflection of the yellow street lights.
