The photo app tagged this as a “plant”. I can be more specific. It is the bark of a palm tree. I like the leaves surrounding it. That’s probably what confused my trusty phone camera. I posted several sketches from a photograph of a very interesting tree I encountered during one of my walks (Texture Study, Bark and Texture, Burl Texture). Below is my rendition of a completely imaginary tree bark complete with burl. I’m thinking of enhancing this with some light watercolor washes.

There’s a bit of everything in the bark of this tree. It seems to have its own ecosystem. I think I might zoom in on a couple of different areas to create several studies. There is a diversity of textures here just waiting to be sketched.
