Abstract Portrait 071517

I started drawing today’s free-form figure with my left hand, just for a change. However, I quickly changed back to my right hand. I made two different designs that overlapped. That was the easy part. I thought quite a bit about where to start on this mass of intertwining lines. Once a bounded area is […]

Bench Series No. 8: Corner Bench

This is the 8th entry of my ‘Bench’ series. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it is long, and configured in an ‘L’ shape. I couldn’t get a geometric, drafting-board worthy shot. I was able to echo the arrangement of the bench with the shadow from the roof.

Unfinished Abstract

Sadly, I was only able the finish the yellow insides of the abstract below before my midnight deadline.  The purple color outside was what I had planned. I used a photo editor as a way to get an idea about the finished piece. I hope to have a watercolor-y looking finished product by tomorrow.

Hand Shadow on Hand

This abstract began as a free-form pencil sketch. A shape with three protrusions reminded me of a hand. I masked out a hand shape in front of the three-fingered one. Then I sketched in the missing two fingers of the partially hidden hand. This was difficult. The thumb and first two fingers face the viewer; […]

Bench Series No. 7

This is, by far the most comfy bench I’ve seen thus far on my walks. I didn’t actually test it out, as I was unaware of its state of occupancy (by vermin). But the owners said it was free for the taking.  It has been there a while now. Strictly speaking, this probably doesn’t fit […]

Street Shadow

The scene below caught my attention. The shadow told me exactly what street signs were attached to the pole. However, the design cast on the sidewalk is interesting even if we don’t know its origin. The signs are transformed from three dimensions to the same two dimensional space as the arrow spray-painted on the sidewalk. […]

It’s a Jungle Out There

There’s a lot going on in the painting below. I first drew a free-form design in pencil and continued it with masking fluid. I used this fluid to fill in some of the shapes that were formed by the overlapping pencil work. I started with Payne’s gray and washed a portion of the top of […]

Bench Series No. 6

The benches at the medical center campus I visited today seem much more uncomfortable than those at bus stops. This one is, effectively, a simple slab of stone. The seating area is very wide; too wide for anyone to sit back, which is probably for the best, as there is no backstop against which to […]
