Portrait from Memory

William, my grandson, is in bed. We had a nice time today, but he is so active I wasn’t able to do a sketch with him in front of me. I memorized his features and tried to replicate them in the portrait below.

Will’s Eiffel Tower

Among the Christmas toys we gave William, our grandson, was a Lego model of the Eiffel Tower. He built it with his dad, with much prompting, instruction and re-direction of focus.  We also gave him a painting set. He wanted to paint with me and started right away when I suggested the Eiffel Tower as […]

Grandson Portrait

At the kids’ house for the holidays. William, my grandson and I are having a great time. It is difficult to get him to sit still enough for me to sketch a portrait.  I waited for him to get involved with his iPad so he would be still. Here are some practice sketches: Here is […]

Big Ben in Chalk

My grandson has an obsession: Big Ben. His waking hours are devoted to drawing and building models of Big Ben, tinkering with clocks, drawing clock faces and dreaming about visiting the real Big Ben in England. Here is one of William’s chalk Big Bens:

Sketches

Rough drive back home. Made great time for about 300 miles then, out of nowhere, the road was like a parking lot. The rest of the trip took forever, and I’m beat. I say this by way of apology for not posting a new watercolor. I made a number of attempts to sketch William, my […]

Lego Builder

Will, my grandson, builds with Legos. Mainly, he builds clock towers. Specifically, Big Ben. He can spend hours hunched over his overflowing box of lego parts, making a tower, brick-by-brick. I sketched this while he was engrossed in his work.

Sketch Practice

I was practicing sketching today. William, my grandson, was the subject. I had to be quick since William was very animated, as are most four-year-olds.  I left my sketchbook open and unattended. William added his own signature drawing on top of mine. But tomorrow is another day, to coin a phrase.

Composition – After William

After a grueling drive, we’re back home. Before we left Burbank, I designed a watercolor sketch that began with a clear water squiggle. At one end, I infused the same blue color that Will, my three-year-old grandson, used in some of his paintings (see Will’s First Masterpiece of the Day, It’s About Process, My Favorite). […]
