Sketch Book Series: Hotel Room (August 2010)
In addition to documenting the hotel room in which I stayed, I used pen and ink to get a variety of different tonal shades in this composition.

I used an ink pen to sketch this scene when I visited Sacramento. I got the straight lines straight enough and the trees wavy enough. The cars were a combination of the ink lines.
In this sketch, I used a gray watercolor wash for the road and shadows. I inked the details of the leaves and accentuated some of the sharper shadows.
I don’t remember using pencil on this sketch. I used black pen sparingly. The focus was on the watercoloring.
This mostly a pencil sketch. I used ink to accent some of the shadow tones and reinforce some outlines.
I sketched this fig tree many times. This is among my first attempts. It is worth while to draw the same subject time after time. One can use different techniques, or practice the same ones over and over. The change over time is an improvement in one’s vision.
I was still not confident enough to draw with pen and ink exclusively. I needed to sketch with pencil first. In a way using a pencil sketch first was like using training wheels when learning to ride a bicycle.
