Sketch Practice

I was practicing sketching today. William, my grandson, was the subject. I had to be quick since William was very animated, as are most four-year-olds.  I left my sketchbook open and unattended. William added his own signature drawing on top of mine. But tomorrow is another day, to coin a phrase.

Kiwi Leaf, Enlarged

I don’t know if a kiwi tree resembles the pattern on its leaf. I rather think a kiwi ‘tree’ is more like a vine, as I took this photo inside an arbor, densely packed with leaves and  branches. What a delicious thought… a kind of ‘ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny’, only instead of a series of forms […]

Abstract Kernel

I didn’t quite know what to make of this except it seems a bit rainbow-ish. My wife thinks it looks like a colorful ear of corn. Seen in this light, I thought of an exploded kernel of corn. This could be a freeze-frame of a high-speed film of a kernel of popcorn during its popping.

Abstract 041517

I began with a brush semi-wet with opera rose. I followed the first stroke with others arranged radially. To be clear, I had no plan beforehand. Each stroke inspired the next, based on its appearance and orientation. I wish to improve my skills in planning a painting. My recent paintings mostly express a passion for […]

Untitled April 15th

I began by mucking about with an unsaturated pigment, Holbein’s Shadow Green. I stabby brush strokes with my 2-inch Hake brush, but the staccato of the physical strokes did not transfer to the visual realm. I overlaid the grayish green background with Hooker’s green and turquoise; a couple of dashes of English yellow punctuated the greenish […]

The Cymbalist

Once again, I was inspired by Paul Klee, Bauhaus Master, for today’s experiment. The Kettle Drummer was in the back of my mind, but Blue Bird Pumpkin gave me the idea for a solid background that surround two colored disks. I am satisfied with this composition as a first step of exploration of this subject. […]

Abstract Figures

I had no idea that I created figures in today’s experiment. I was just playing with lines and washes. I outlined areas of similar shade with heavy lines. It wasn’t until I turned the composition 180 degrees, did I see the figures.

Flames

My opening doodles today were a bit different than usual. Instead of closed forms, I left open loops. I was hoping that it would result in a closed maze so I could blacken the inner paths. I do like the airy nature of this composition. The forms remind me of flames.
