Under a Microscope

I started this one with a multi-layer wash. I outlined it in Payne’s grey to create a stage. The shape reminds me of a painter’s palette. I was a bit stymied at this point. I did not know what to do next, so I just doodled around. I ended up slashing around with a razor […]

Bookmark

I intended some of the brushstrokes to represent pages of open books. The bold green stroke that divides some of the curved lines is the bookmark (with a vengeance). It rips trough the pages to make itself known.

Abstract 021220

This piece is characterized my high visual frequency (i,e,. wavy) lines. They remind me of wood screws driving through space. I began with short blue and yellow squiggles. Later in the process, the red lines began to dominate. Hansa yellow, a very orangey yellow really worked will with the reds on.  A more lemony yellow […]

More: No Power

I tried to schedule my last ‘No Power’ post, but it went right out.  I hope I can share with you this watercolor practice wash that I did today.

Abstract 013120

I like the overall pastel look to this experiment. The inner complexity is bracketed on each side, by two dark red shapes, the left one of which is interrupted by the edge of the paper. The turquoise blue wavy structures bracket the top and bottom of the picture. The inner figures are not overly intricate, […]

Sunset Through Unwashed Window

I began this experiment with a blue stroke near the top of the paper. I laid another one down and  merged it with purple. I made sure that the brush was fully loaded so that I could get some drips. (I like to do that now and then.)  I put a red quarter-circle in the […]

Layers

I began this one with a relatively opaque watercolor called Terra Rosa. I like its tone, although it is a bit dull. At this point, I had no plan for how I wanted this work to look at the end. I put down some more wide strokes. Some of the blue marks were bold, some […]

Indecision Resolved

It may not appear so, but I worked on this piece for several days. My first brush scribbles danced around the idea of faces. I contrasted the linear strokes with gray and blue washes. I created three or four faces consciously, but there could be more of which I am not aware. The canvas looks […]

Howling Wolf

I have fallen back into one of my earlier ways of painting: I make a mark or a stroke with my brush and then decide what to do next. Each mark I make inspires the next. My idea of the finish painting shifts as the marks and strokes progress. Sometimes I make a leap, that […]

My Concept of Cloud Formation

I planned to reverse the process of finding faces in clouds by creating faces and hiding them in my painted clouds. It’s harder than it seems. There are a couple of half-formed faces in this abstract, and plenty of half-formed clouds. It seems there is a cut-away, a cross section of a dark cloud that […]
