Large Man in the Way of the Reading I Was Trying to Sketch

There was an interesting gathering in the cafe. They were reading. I don’t know if they were writers, but it was fun watching them interact. I briefly placed each figure to get a sense of space. THEN a very large man blocked about half the view.  But I kept drawing anyway.

Grampa and Gramma and Bored Kid

I’ve seen these folks before (Second Day of School). This time the girl was exhausted, or very bored. School can take it out of you.

Last Outdoor Party of the Year

Light and dark divided evenly for a day. Dark will take over from now on. And cold. This is the last outdoor party of the year. This year.

Discussion

This seemed like a fun group. The gent with the fedora had a hatband with lights that fired off in sequence. I don’t know what they were talking about, but they all seemed to enjoy each other.

This allows my initial marks to be spontaneous as well as visible (without overworking them, as I must do with […]

Book Club

One usually doesn’t see more that three people sitting together in the cafe at the bookstore; and they are usually silent. So when I saw three tables pushed together, with at least 6 characters gathered around, I took notice. It was lovely when one of them began to read aloud.

Drying Off Under the Umbrella

These young ladies were drying off after a dunk in the pool. When I draw more than one figure, I lightly sketch them in, to get the relative positions of each. In the drawing below, the figure on the far right was too big at first. I re-drew it with a heavier sketch of the […]

Out with Family and Friends

I’ve said before that I try not to use erasers. One exception to my self-imposed rule is when I sketch family and friends, especially when there it is very likely they will see it.  I think the sketch below is a fair representation of our very nice outing. I only used the eraser once.
