Today’s watercolor experiment:
Among my photographs of New York City from the 1980s and 90s are snapshots of interesting graffiti. There was a lot of it back then. The wall pictured below, lit as it was with light glancing off the bricks, compelled me to take a picture. I’m not quite sure why I did not take another picture showing the entire work. I do like how the photo is framed.
I tried to capture the essence of the photograph in my watercolor below. It is a representation of the photograph.
The colors of my painting are not as vibrant as the photo, nor is the design totally faithful to the original. This section of the graffiti wall is not as much about the pattern, or the saturated colors. It is about the bricks and the oblique lighting that emphasizes the surface features. I did not capture this to my satisfaction.
Perhaps, in another edition of this painting, I could abstract the surface features of the colorful bricks in a similar way to my series of abstracting from Abstract 072415 (Abstracting an Abstract, Abstract of Abstracted Abstract 072415, Next Generation).

The painting has a lot of life though. I actually thought it was another photo! I like it.
Thank you!
