I am enthralled with the black lines that Paul Klee uses in many of his compositions. I understand that he used them in his later work to guide the viewers’ eyes around the the artwork. Ensconced in these maze-like traces are iconic figures. I tried emulating this style is some of my previous experiments (Study – Icon Maze, It’s Alive (?)). Today, my interest was in the space-dividing use of thick black lines.
I began with a very wide pen nib. I let the wandering pen determine the outline, leaving wide traces as I drew it along, and very narrow lines if I pushed it laterally. I used a variety of other nibs for the rest of the design.
