Federal Graffiti

Today’s watercolor experiment:

One can always remember the location of some graffiti. In some cases, it is a landmark building, in which case the graffiti doesn’t persist for very long; in other cases the address is built right into the graffiti itself.  The latter is the case in today’s sketch. The sign over the door gives the location as 525 Broome Street. This is just a couple of streets south of Houston (or, in SoHo, to use a common abbreviation).

I started today’s sketch in pencil and inked over it with a fine-tip pen. Next I inked over the large letters of the Federal Screw Supply Co. (I wonder if that is the name of a real company).  I then penned the smurffy-looking character, the hand holding the screw (over the door on the left) and the two characters on the central walls. It isn’t clear from my sketch, but there is a screw impaling Mr. Imposter Smurf.

The photograph has an overall smurffy look to it… perhaps because of the blue cast. Ironic, since the graffiti artist apparently hated smurfs.
