Stealth

One of my hopes as a street photographer was to emulate the work of early photographers such as Walker Evans, in capturing enigmatic faces of subway riders.

Most of my photos connected with this effort were blurry because I had to be nonchalant about snapping the shutter. I didn’t look through the viewfinder and, back in the 1990s, the camera I used was totally manual. I used a fixed focus and hoped for the best.

The photo below is one of the best of the lot. I was not noticed by the people sitting across from me, but I’m sure the lady outside the train saw me.
