Life Drawing Crassula Purpureum

Today’s watercolor experiment:

My daughter Bethany bought me another succulent: Crassula Purpureum. It is in one of those thin, biodegradable pots (I hope it’s biodegradable). I experimented with life drawing today, since yesterday I drew by looking back and forth between the paper and the plant.

Today, I didn’t look at the paper at all. I used a layout pencil first and then inked it over.

Although I was pretty accurate with the outline, I did have some problems with the forms inside that contour. In fact, in order to have a complete drawing, I had to reproduce the same leaf combinations several times, to make up for the gaps.

In retrospect, I know that if I did a better job with the contour, the innards would have probably fallen into place.

All in all, I’m happy with this composition and proud of the fact that I was able to draw without looking.
