Today I played some more with stabby brush strokes. I used Bristol paper, I think. The pad was removed from its cover, so I only know that the paper was smooth and the paint did not soak in.
I splotched mainly blues and reds, with a dash of yellow here and there. After the paper dried, I washed it with light hues of yellow, red and blue in different areas. I dabbed some of the areas with a rough sponge, but much of the pigment remained on the paper. Also, the sponge texture failed to boldly imprint on the paper; its primary effect was to soften the colors underneath. I reinforced some of the random dabs on top of the washes in the final phase of this composition.
