I usually paint on a block of watercolor paper, on which all four sides are tacked down to prevent warping. Today, I used a single sheet of light weight paper that I taped to a board to accomplish the same end: preventing the paper from buckling.
I was surprised that the pigments I used did not soak into the paper as they do with the cold pressed paper I normally use.
I applied texture by using stabby brush strokes and blotting the wet paint with paper towels. I used a sponge to lighten certain areas and applied more pigment to increase contrast with some of the shapes that coalesced on the paper.
Very interesting what you did with the contrast. The two figures have a floating like illusion.
Yes, I like puttering around the edges of a form with a darker color.
