I was reading about a new book today, which I can’t wait to get. The author is Eric Kandel, Nobel Prize winning neuroscientist who wrote The Age of Insight, a wonderful book about art and the brain. His latest book is called Reductionism in Art in Brain Science: Bridging the Two Cultures. “Abstract art, says Kandel, is… the key to understanding both how art and science inform one another, and together, they might open up entirely new ways of seeing and imagining,” according to review by Cody Delistraty (@Delistraty). I am fiercely interested in the brain, so this book is a must read for me.

Creativity for Amateurs?

In the same review, Delistraty quotes Richard Serra and Chuck Close, ” Creativity is for amateurs. We go out there and we solve problems. We set tasks for ourselves and we solve them.”   I value my creativity, but I also respect these artists. I found myself seeking a problem to solve for today’s painting.

Alas, I could not shift my way of thinking today. I began my painting as I usually do, with several random brush strokes. I looked for inspiration based on what I saw and painted accordingly.
