During my walks around New York in the late 1980s and 1990s I saw many interesting things. I frequently walked south on Broadway to an important dividing line: Houston Street (pronounced How-stun). It divides South of Houston (SoHo) from North of Houston (NoHo).

I don’t know how many times I looked south from the northern corner of Broadway and Houston and marveled at the sloppy work done on the building across the way. Girders protruded everywhere. They were arranged in a matrix, as if the iron workers measured too long. For the most part, they were on a blank wall overlooking a parking lot, so I mulled over the possibility that the demolition people forgot to remove the ends of the ‘I’ beams.

It wasn’t until much later did I realize that it was actually a sculpture that someone made on purpose.
