Those of you who have been following my blog for a while, might recognize some of the themes in this self portrait sketch. My brother Mike was autistic, low functioning and nonverbal, and I never quite knew if he knew I was his brother. Since we are brothers, we have the same genetic inheritance, so I’ve combined our faces. Here, there are two profiles facing each other as well as a mixed-up frontal portrait. The questions and music that I hear and articulate lose meaning as it filters to the ‘Mike’ half of the portrait.

I think this is great. Both artistically and for how you have expressed a theme and a history that I know is embedded in you.
Thank you, Claudia. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about self portraiture and how to delve into my history with my brother. Most of this particular sketch is derived from my previous work. With this series I’m trying to wrack my brain for other visuals that could express my relationship with Mike (and other things that make me me).
