During my walks, I’ve noticed a variety of standpipes, a fire-suppression system, in front of most commercial buildings. A standpipe, as I understand it, is a network of pipes inside a structure, most likely connected to the sprinkler system, to which the fire department has access via a set of pipes and valves outside the building. If the fire hose is connected to these pipes, water can be sent in to put out the fire.
