When I put my violin away for a while, I loosened the strings. I thought this would preserve it during prolonged disuse. After a while, I wanted to play again. I opened the case an took out my violin. I heard something rolling around inside. It was the sound peg, a small dowel, hand fitted to fit precisely between the sound-generating wooden front of the violin, to the sturdy back. The sound travels down the peg and is reflected off the back of the violin to project a full sound. I have yet to find a violin maker to re-fit the peg into place. Until I do, I’m not able to play. I miss playing.
