This watercolor sketch was very difficult to do. The ‘leaves’ of a pine tree are so thin, they are called needles. The reference photograph shows a complicated interplay among the pine needles that gracefully arch downward from their origins in the pine cone. I started with pen and ink to draw the trajectories of the pine needles. I thought that overlaying splotches of color on the ink lines could convey a pleasing visual sense. It seems to have worked to some degree.
