Meditation Series: (4/8) Smoke Shop, NYC (1988)

In this sketch, I began by inking in the smoke shop and surroundings. I then introduced a gradient: from yellow at the center, to red at the periphery. I used the VW bug as a symbol of the 1960s, when head shops were common and metallic watercolors and oil-based pens, to make paint areas that I needed to be opaque. The bulgy structure illustrates a different kind of reality one experiences after indulging in head-shop products.
