Quarantine Portrait Series: Mike in Respiratory Distress

My brother Mike is autistic, nonverbal and low functioning. He is in the hospital across the country from me. I think he looks peaceful here, but he was anything but. He continues to struggle with breathing. [Note: I just now talked to his doc in the midst of composing this post.]  The hospital found a problem in his lungs and urgently requested permission to put him on a ventilator.

The doc said it doesn’t look good for him even if they get his oxygen level up. He might not make it out of the hospital.

Even if I was with my brother Dave on the east coast, we wouldn’t be able to spend time with Mike at the hospital.  On aspect of autism is the condition of ‘alone-ness. Mike certainly was separate from Dave and me.  I would really like to be with him now; if not for him, for me.
