My brother Mike is autistic, nonverbal and low functioning. He is in the hospital across the country from me. I think he looks peaceful here, but he was anything but. He continues to struggle with breathing. [Note: I just now talked to his doc in the midst of composing this post.] The hospital found a problem in his lungs and urgently requested permission to put him on a ventilator.
The doc said it doesn’t look good for him even if they get his oxygen level up. He might not make it out of the hospital.
Even if I was with my brother Dave on the east coast, we wouldn’t be able to spend time with Mike at the hospital. On aspect of autism is the condition of ‘alone-ness. Mike certainly was separate from Dave and me. I would really like to be with him now; if not for him, for me.
I’m very sorry to read that. God bless you!
Thank you so much, Beate!
Such a difficult time, sending positive thoughts to you.
Thank you, Jean. We’re continuing to follow the situation very closely. I appreciate your kind thoughts.
I am so sorry. I know you have so many emotions right now. I hope for the best.
Thanks, Claudia. Every day is a new adventure in coping.
I’m glad the hospital is giving you some kind of contact. But this can’t replace being there. So difficult for everyone. (K)
Yeah, that’s true. I also believe that the ‘no visitor’ policy has the potential to cause relaxed vigilance by staff.
Having spent much of 2018 in the hospital with a friend, I agree. Patients need an advocate.
People who expect the best without being there don’t really know. You were a good friend!
Thanks Jack. I did my best.
;>)
I am so sorry he is so far away from you.
Thank you for your kind words.
