I wanted to see what would happen if I superimposed a regular, studied sketch on a blind drawing of the same portrait subject. I used a photograph of my father as the model on which to experiment. My choice of subject holds emotional content, as my dad passed away a while ago and I still miss him.
I drew the inked outline first, without looking at the drawing paper. After that I did a careful pencil sketch of my dad, checking frequently between the reference photo and the drawing surface. It was a little difficult to ignore the overlying ink portrait.
I haven’t come to any conclusions about the relationship between the ‘unconscious’ (blind-drawn) figure and the carefully drawn portrait. However, as a viewer, I only see the ink drawing or the watercolor sketch; I can’t see them both at the same time, or even a merging of the two into a third, coherent image.

Thank you, ;>)
This is wonderful. 🙂
M! Is it you? Thanks!
Hey, J! It’s been a while, huh? I hope the universe finds you in good spirits. Wishing you and yours happy holidays and a delightful new year full of artful inspiration! 🙂
Thanks, M. Best wishes back to you and yours. Happy holidays and here’s to a better decade to come. Hope you are well!
;>)
Thank you, J! Yes, indeed! It hadn’t even occurred to me that we are about to enter a new decade. Time has become a bit of an arbitrary concept since my retirement. I’ve mostly been focussing on producing art which serves to keep me sane! 🙂
Hey, M. It is definitely much harder to track time in retirement. Hope you are enjoying it. Glad to hear you are doing your art. Are you in the US?
Best,
J
Morning, J. I hope you’ve had an enjoyable and relaxing holiday so far. Time has indeed become a very abstract concept to me. Other than doctors’ appointments and travel I don’t really find myself having to think about time at all.
I’ve been in the US now for four and a half years, in Maryland. Probably the length of time that I’ve been absent from my regular WordPress posts and many blogs. Some of my blogs have survived, although I generally only post the odd work of art from ‘Diary of a Person Being Human’. It’s nice to see you still producing art. 🙂
Have a good day!
M
So glad you’re doing well, M! I try to look for something new every day as fodder for my art, since my regular schedule evaporated years ago. I’ll catch up with your recent art on you ‘human’ blog. Great to chat with you!

Interesting method. I would like to try it myself!
Sometimes it’s hard to avoid distraction from the underlying image. Hope you do give it a try!
When I look at your creation, I see one image. It has more “fission” quality than others. But still one image–and more interesting because of it. Maybe people’s “image viewers” vary in this way.
I’m glad that the image comes through as a whole. I think that while creating the second image, there is interaction between the original and the one ‘under construction’. Thanks!
I agree and am looking forward to exploring this sort of double vision right away!
Thanks, Carol. It so happens that I did it again (scheduled for tomorrow – Friday 4/24/2020). It was unplanned.
