Texture Study

This was much more difficult than I imagined. The rough and varied structure of the tree was hard to convert to lines and dots. Usually textures extend over an area where at least three parallel lines can convey a tone of grey. These three lines, if wiggled, can give the impression of a rough or smooth finish depending on the wiggle frequency.

The surface of the tree’s bark changed so much, and in so small a space, that I couldn’t quite capture it with pen and ink. I tried wiggly lines and dots with different spacings in between.

I ended up covering my embarrassment with tints of watercolor and some heavier markings.

Enlarging the photograph would have been helpful, but doing so revealed no additional texture.

  1. I think you are underestimating your success. I think you captured the feel of the tree, 100%. All the action, the motion, of something that is not moving, I think that is really revealing of this tree’s personality.
