East Village Dragon

During this photographic outing I must have been in NYC’s East Village, since my notes tell me I was on 10th or 11th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues.

Aside from my love of dragons, the purpose in this pen and ink exercise was to clarify the out-of-focus figure into a more recognizable form.

As I began scratching out the dark shapes, it occurred to me that there were two dragon heads in this overhead frieze. Another look at the frieze gave me the impression that it could depict that one dragon was giving another a piggy-back ride? Or something resembling a piggy back ride… Could the dragon with the curved neck be carrying the head of the other dragon?  I am not familiar enough with dragon lore to know of any stories that would bear out the latter explanation for the stone illustration.
