Abstract 031316

I began this watercolor by using latex resist to paint a long shape flanked by small dots. After that dried I applied a graded dark blue wash (indanthrone blue). I tilted the paper up so that rivulets of blue would leak from darker to lighter areas. After that dried I applied an orange yellow (English yellow) wash from the opposite side of the paper from which I began the blue wash.

After removing the latex, I painted the long shape orange, where it was surrounded by blue, gradually changing it to red where the blue turned to green.  I painted the dots red and blue.

Finally I inked the shapes with an oil-based pen.

9″x12″ 140# Cold Pressed Watercolor Block

I wish I had a rationale that dictated the placement of forms or even the configurations of the outlines and radiations from the circular colors. They just seemed to fit.  I would feel much better if I were progressing to (or even failing to achieve progress toward) the fulfillment of an inner vision much as Klee, Kandinsky, Miró and other great artists strived to do.
