I painted the watercolors below based on photos I took during my last visit to see Mike (note – be aware that there may be triggers in this post. I was very emotional at the time), which was two years ago. Mom was still alive and Dave, my younger brother was able to attend as well. He drove us to Mike’s geriatric group home. Mike is autistic, nonverbal and low functioning.
This is Mom and Mike on the couch (originally posted June 18, 2014 Holding Hand):
From June 17, 2014 (Once More with Feeling), is an early portrait of Mike based on our visit. It is quite unlike my recent watercolor portraits of him that abstract his features (Mike Crying, Young Mike, In Transition, Final Transition, Final Portrait).
This is a portrait of Mom and Mike from June 16, 2014 (Family):
I painted a study of my two brothers and me on that day in 2013 . An early draft of the study was published on June 14, 2014, More of the Picture. Below is the final version:
Here is another portrait of Mike from that day (posted originally on June 13, 2014, Distance):
You’re very talented!

These are beautifully done, very moving. (K)
Thank you, Kerfe.
I remember reading about the preparation and the trip itself at the time. Loved revisiting it through your paintings.
Thank you. I’m glad that you remember it from the original posts and enjoyed the recap through my paintings. Anniversaries such as birthdays allow one to go back in time.
best,
Jack
