Today’s watercolor experiment:
I looked at a lot of Jawlensky‘s portraits today and did a lot of drawings trying to distill the photograph seen in the Mike Crying post. I took the advice of Paul Klee and ‘took my pencil point for a walk’ to define Mike’s* features in as simple a way as possible.

One of the paintings I wanted to emulate was Jawlensky’s Abstract Head: Life and Death. I used the marks for the mouth (not that visible) from Klee’s lithograph, After the Drawing.
Comment:
I might be getting closer to the essence that I want to portray. The disembodied head and the delicate hand on which it rests contribute a feeling of isolation. The forward-looking eye does not quite have the teariness that would have added additional emotional content to the study.
- Mike is my older brother who is autistic, low functioning and nonverbal.
Nice design like your play of light and dark. Plus I always liked Klee’s work.
