Today’s watercolor experiment:

I watched a video about painting waves and tried it out.

Waves – Process:

I carefully wet the paper, unlike my normal practice of soaking it. After preparing a wash of Prussian blue, I applied it lightly, making it slightly darker at the bottom of the paper. When the paper was dry I wet it again and drew my Prussian blue-laden brush across. If the blue color spread, the paper was too wet. A dry brush could soak up the excess if this should occur.

I made small horizontal blue strokes, dark and broad at the bottom, getting lighter and thinner as the waves approached the horizon.

Reflections – Process:

I was on my own for this part of the composition. No videos.  I painted colors, red closer to the horizon and yellow at the edge, to represent a sunset. I stroked in some of these colors in short strokes from the horizon .

Comment:

The wave portion of this composition worked out well. The reflections, however did not. Perhaps some latex resist would have been in order to allow for pure yellow reflections instead of the green-tinted one, which resulted from the yellow painted over the Prussian blue.
