Variation

Yesterday my watercolor painting was a representation of the impenetrable barrier I feel exists between my older autistic brother and me. I still don’t know how to classify this type of painting. Is it abstract? Perhaps it is an abstract to someone other than me, because I constructed it with a theme in mind. I’m still hoping that some artist or art historian can straighten me out on this point.

I liked my design from yesterday, so I tried a variation today. First of all, I changed the format. Yesterday I used 7″x10″ paper, today I used 9″x12″ paper. The other variable was the finish of the paper. Yesterday, I used paper with a rough finish, today I hot pressed paper, which has a very smooth finish.

When I painted on the rough surface, I noticed that the paint seemed to soak right in. It was easy for me to paint with a wet brush on the dry paper. I could paint at a leisurely pace and not notice any marks caused by pausing in between brush strokes.

I noticed with hot pressed paper, that any hesitation with the brush causes a mark to appear (when using a wet-on-dry technique). Therefore I decided to go wet-on-wet. The only problems were the detailed pen and ink forms that I wanted to keep white. I found that I didn’t like the way the brush strokes came out.

Here is today’s study:

One other thing, I will have to test colors that have an affinity for the hot pressed paper. I used the Terra Verde in the triangle toward the top of the painting. It didn’t come out as I had hoped.

  1. Jack, I think it’s wonderful that you are expressing yourself two dimensionally in this way. I love the image, and for me a fascinating insight into the way you view your internal landscapes. Being a synaesthete I could have a field-day with this piece. I’m looking forward to seeing what you create next!

    • Thanks M.
don’t exactly know if this represents my inner landscape. For a while I worked on developing symbols that had meaning for me. Then I incorporated them into a meta language (I think) in 2-dimensions. The spectrum seems important to me.
I wish I was a synesthete. I think that would be so cool!
Thanks for the comment! I wish I had time to read more of your work. You are a dynamo! I agree with the fellow who said he was dizzied after reading your blogs. Keep up the good work!

      Warmest regards,
      Your friend,
      Jack
